Christians and Yoga

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. ~3 John 2

Our bodies are God’s temples. We believe that enjoying radiant health is one more way that we can thank God for our blessings.  Yoga is a "methodology" and not a "theology." Just like many other medically sound practices, yoga has its roots in cultures beyond our own. However, the Eastern spirituality associated so often with yoga is just a cultural influence that can be separated out from the practice and should be separated out for the Christian to be practicing authentically.  Yahweh Yoga, (Frances's training school) teaches yoga from the Christian perspective and foundation. Yoga itself is a practice of wellbeing, and is not a religion. For religious people, however, yoga can become an integral part of living a "fuller" life of praise and thankfulness. And this is why it has become adapted into religious life, very much like dance or song, for people all over the world. Yoga stimulates the body and integrates its functions, but it also encourages a satisfying relaxation that prepares the heart for meditating on God's holy word. For the Christian, praciticing yoga is a way of honoring God with our bodies, and practicing single-mindedness as the Bible instructs us to do.

We teach yoga in both overtly Christian and secular settings, because God has led us in that direction. In secular settings yoga is taught as a "methodology with heart" - and we pray for, privately, the joy of all of our students and that their life would be made complete by their Creator, who made them and loves them. We trust God to handle how this all works out.
